If you are a doctor and want to work in the UK, you need to register with the General Medical Council (GMC) and be eligible for a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa. Some documentary requirements for the GMC registration and the visa application are the same, and in this article, we will list all you need to prepare for both.
GMC Registration Pathways
We have discussed in a previous article the types of registration that you can apply for with the GMC. You can apply for ‘Provisional registration’, ‘Full registration’, ‘General Practitioner registration’, or ‘Specialist registration’. The credentials you present to the GMC will determine which path your registration will take. You can provide any of the following:
- Evidence of a pass in the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test
- Evidence of sponsorship from a GMC approved sponsor
- Proof of an acceptable postgraduate qualification
- GP or Specialist qualification
- Specialist or GP registration for doctors who hold a relevant European Specialist or GP qualification
- And proof of an acceptable overseas registration exam
Required Documents to Work in the UK
All registration pathways have commonly required documents. An essential document, especially for people intending to work abroad, is a valid passport. As an International Medical Graduate (IMG), you need to provide evidence of:
- an acceptable primary medical qualification that is PSV certified,
- an acceptable period of internship or experience,
- an IELTS or OET passing certificate,
- a Certificate of Good Standing from each health regulatory authority you’ve belonged to,
- details of all your medical and non-medical activities for the last 5 years, including unemployment, maternity leave, study leave, career breaks, clinical attachments and vacations
- a declaration of your fitness to practice,
- your GMC application

Supporting Documents
Depending on your country of residence, you may be required to present a Tuberculosis (TB) test for your visa application. Citizens from the Philippines, India, Pakistan, and others in the UK list will need to undergo a TB test at a clinic approved by the Home Office. As Medical Practitioners, you are eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa, with occupation code 2211 for Anaesthetists, Consultants (Hospital Service), Doctors, GPs, Paediatricians, Psychiatrists, Radiologists, and Surgeons.
An alternative visa pathway is the Health and Care Worker visa, where you’ll need to provide your certificate of sponsorship reference number provided by your GMC-approved sponsor. You may also be required to present evidence of funds (Bank certificate with at least £1,270 money available for at least 28 days in a row, with day 28 within 31 days of applying for the Health and Care Worker visa.
GMC Accepts Your TrueProof

If you already have a TrueProof for your credentials, you can transfer them directly to the GMC for your medical registration. The GMC accepts our Primary Source Verification (PSV) report for your documents. The process for the report transfer is the same as if you were applying for your GCC requirements, which we have covered in an earlier article. You don’t need to pay for an additional verification once you have your TrueProof from TrueProfile.io.
Get More Out of Your TrueProfile.io Membership
Once you have your verified credentials from TrueProfile.io, you will own your TrueProof that international authorities like the GMC recognize. Your TrueProof is also recognized by regulators in other countries, most particularly in the GCC region. And because our TrueProofs are stored in the Ethereum blockchain, it renders your documents future-proof. Store them on your Digital CV page and use it as a digital resumé!
