World Cancer Day With 4 Global Oncologists

On 4th February, the world observes World Cancer Day, a crucial initiative to enhance understanding, break down stigma, and alleviate fear surrounding cancer. In support of this cause, we spoke with TrueProfile.io Members who specialize in oncology.

In this feature, they shed light on practical lifestyle measures to lower the risk of cancer, why a career in oncology is rewarding, and offer valuable tips for those seeking opportunities overseas.

We spoke to:

Dr. Nadeem Pervez, 🇵🇰 Pakistani Radiation Oncologist in Canada and Middle East

Dr. Layth Mula-Hussain, 🇮🇶 Iraqi Consultant Physician and Radiation Oncologist in Oman

Dr. Arab Arzeki, 🇩🇿 Medical Oncologists in Algeria

Dr. Sabah Sal, 🇩🇿 Medical Oncologists in Algeria

Meet Your Fellow TrueProfile.io Members

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m Dr. Nadeem Parvez and I am a Radiation Oncologist. I graduated from Pakistan and then moved to Ireland for further training in radiation therapy for cancer. I then moved to Canada where I worked and received my Canadian nationality. I’ve worked in multiple countries in the Middle East including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar.

I am now the co-chairman of MESTRO – which stands for Middle East Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology where we are working together for regional and international networking, collaboration and education in various oncological disciplines.

This society is created in a region since there was no radiation oncology society. We created this society to improve the oncology services in the Middle East and neighboring countries like Turkey and Eastern regions.

Why did you choose to be a radiation oncologist?

I always had a strong background in physics and computers. Radiation oncology is the perfect amalgamation of both medicine and science and so, I felt this would suit my interests well. This is an emerging field and there is lots to do in this area.

How does your organization raise awareness of cancer?

We created MESTRO to improve the quality of services being provided to cancer patients and to bring together world-class oncologists on one platform. We have done extensive research on how to improve different aspects of cancer therapy and conducted a Radiation Oncology Conference which was very successful.

What do you wish that the general public knew about cancer?

There are many forms of cancer that can be detected early and can be cured 100%. Breast cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer can be screened and diagnosed successfully. If you have symptoms, I would suggest talking to your doctor and taking serious steps about it.

Simple tests like a pap smear can help save your life. If you have family history, then I would strongly recommend women of reproductive age to get a test done every 3 years.

Would you recommend an international healthcare career? Why?

I would definitely recommend it! When I moved out of my country I found that people living abroad have better tolerance for culture and religion. People know how to coexist with each other. There are vast opportunities for growth, especially in the field of research. I published many articles and initiated treatments that are now standard in the world. I feel that an international healthcare career gave me more financial and academic freedom to grow.

Would you recommend DataFlow and TrueProfile.io to your colleagues?

TrueProfile.io and DataFlow have been a great help for me to get my documents verified, especially for the Middle Eastern region. I would recommend it 100%!

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m Dr. Layth Mula-Hussain. I was born and raised in Mosul, Iraq. and completed my medical school in Iraq in 1999. I started my clinical training in oncology in 2002 and then moved to Jordan to work at the King Hussain Cancer Center in 2006. After working there for six years, I did my Masters in Advanced Oncology from Germany and then moved to Canada and completed my residency at Tombica Cancer Center.

Then I returned to Iraq to establish an oncology certification program that was certified by the Board. After 2017, I moved back to Canada to work in Alberta and completed my fellowship in radiosurgery. I moved to Oman in 2021 and worked as a Radiation Oncologist at Sultan Qaboos Cancer Centre in Muscat.

Why did you choose to become a radiation oncologist?

My elder brother passed away due to Osteosarcoma back in the 1980s. During that era, there was no advanced treatment available for cancer in Iraq and that’s when I decided that I would challenge the system.

Today, I have achieved my dream and established the first radiation oncology certification program in Iraq. I’m honored that I am a participant in this change.

How is your experience working in a multidisciplinary organization in Oman?

The Sultan Qaboos Cancer Centre in Muscat, Oman is a state-of-the-art facility and patient-centered organization. The organization has introduced Cyber Knife for the first time in Oman and I’m very proud of it. There are six consultants working in our department and we all come from different countries like Pakistan, Malaysia, Algeria, Turkey and Brazil.

We enjoy each other’s company because we have different traditions, languages, and varieties of backgrounds. It also helps in better communication with our patients.

What is one thing you love about your job?

I love three things about my job – the humanitarian, the technological and the medicinal aspects. My job is a combination of all three.

Do you have any advice for budding oncologists?

I actually wrote a book called Speciality Portfolio in Radiation Oncology. It is a roadmap that will help budding oncologists in finding their way around. The Qatar University Press has made it free for anyone to download and we have now distributed more than 5000 copies.

How did you learn about TrueProfile.io?

When I came to Oman, I was asked to get my certificates verified through DataFlow and that’s when I came across TrueProfile.io. I would recommend it to my fellow colleagues and friends too.

Can you tell us about your job within oncology and why you chose this career path?

I chose medical oncology for many reasons. I like helping people and a patient who has cancer is really someone who needs help. Oncology is also an area where research is constantly progressing. This is very exciting and I love that.

Can you describe what a typical day or week looks like for you?

One day a week I go to the office to do consultations with new patients. I study their files and examine them. A multidisciplinary meeting which includes cancer specialists like surgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologist then discusses diagnosis and treatment plans for newly diagnosed patients. I then explain to the patients about the procedure.

A lot of my time also goes in teaching students, participating in conferences and reviewing journals and articles to keep myself up to date with the latest trends in oncology.

How did you first hear about TrueProfile.io?

I heard about Trueprofile.io from friends when I became interested by working abroad.

Would you recommend TrueProfile.io? Why?

Yes. They are serious and provide a very personalized service.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Dr. Sal Sabah from Algeria and I am a specialist in medical oncology.

What advice would you give to any budding healthcare professionals interested in a career in oncology?

My advice is not to listen to people who tell you that this specialty is depressing. On the contrary, it is an extremely rewarding career that offers the treatment and support of cancer patients.

How are you or your organization raising awareness about cancer?

I work in a state hospital and we hold open days for the public to increase awareness about cancer on World Cancer Day.

Would you recommend a career in oncology?
