It’s sometimes assumed that in order to get a job abroad, you need at least one to two years of work experience. Right? Well, not really. It actually depends on the needs of the employer and your field of expertise. Before the pandemic wrought havoc on a global scale, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was already processing professional licenses for Nurses who have just graduated from university. They are termed freshers and they usually come from overseas.

As soon as COVID-19  began to test the capacity of hospitals and highlighted the need for more medical workers, countries like the United States relaxed their guidelines on licensing. They allowed retired professionals to come back to the workforce, and made it possible for new graduates to immediately enter the medical field with temporary licenses.

Can I go abroad with minimal-to-no experience?

It ultimately depends on the needs of the employer. For healthcare professionals, like Registered Nurses and other allied professions, there is a high demand for their services right now. This translates to more relaxed requirements on work experience. The most important part is to get your credentials verified ahead of time, so that you are ready to fly as soon as possible.

What is the ideal amount of work experience required?

For Registered Nurses, as mentioned above, countries like the KSA accept “fresher” graduates. Other employers, though, may be more particular. Most healthcare job adverts on average require 2-3 years of clinical experience. If you have more experience, you can expect to earn more and to get picked ahead of those who have no work experience at all.

Doctors, on the other hand, are expected to have at least 3-5 years of experience, and most jobs abroad look for consultants and specialists. Countries like the U.A.E., for example, prefer those with extensive clinical practice.
