The 5 Things You Need to do When You Get a Job Abroad
<p>Congratulations on getting that job overseas! There are a lot of things that you have to consider and a lot of things that you need to do that it can be quite overwhelming. Before you pop that champagne cork to celebrate, here are the five things you need to do first when you get a job abroad.</p> <h2>Check your job contract</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="1024" height="682" src="https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/blur-blurry-coffee-273222-1-1024x682.jpg" alt="Things You Need Do Get Job Abroad" class="wp-image-10348" title="Things You Need Do Get Job Abroad" srcset="https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/blur-blurry-coffee-273222-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/blur-blurry-coffee-273222-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/blur-blurry-coffee-273222-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/blur-blurry-coffee-273222-1-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/blur-blurry-coffee-273222-1.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Write down all the things you need to do.</figcaption></figure> <p>It’s not just the actual compensation that you need to take a look at. You also need to take a look at the fine print. What are the benefits? Will your company provide accommodation? Do they provide free or subsidized transportation? Another important thing to consider is healthcare benefits. It should be covered as you can imagine how costly it would be if you were to shell out medical coverage for yourself.</p> <h2>Check the cost of living at your destination</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="1024" height="669" src="https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/apple-brainstorming-camera-908288-1-1024x669.jpg" alt="Things You Need Do Get Job Abroad" class="wp-image-10350" title="Things You Need Do Get Job Abroad" srcset="https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/apple-brainstorming-camera-908288-1-1024x669.jpg 1024w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/apple-brainstorming-camera-908288-1-300x196.jpg 300w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/apple-brainstorming-camera-908288-1-768x502.jpg 768w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/apple-brainstorming-camera-908288-1-1200x784.jpg 1200w, https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2021/03/apple-brainstorming-camera-908288-1.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Will your take-home pay be enough?</figcaption></figure> <p>Your salary might sound astronomical at first glance. What you need to consider is the <a href="https://blog.trueprofile.io/cost-living-dubai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cost of living at your destination</a>. What won’t be covered by your benefits? Some companies shoulder all the living expenses like housing, transportation, electricity, water, and even internet/phone bills. If these are not covered, do your research first if your take-home pay is enough to cover these plus your desired savings and remittances.</p> <h2>What are your contingency plans?</h2> <p>There are some countries that require an <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/e/exit-visa.asp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exit visa</a> and you should check out your destination to see if this applies to you. Picture what you need to do should an <a href="https://blog.trueprofile.io/emergency-preparedness-overseas-workers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emergency</a> arise. Get the numbers of your embassy, your company representative, and even your manpower agency’s representative. Discuss with your family what to do in cases where either party can’t get a hold of the other. Make sure to set aside and save for a contingency fund.</p> <h2>Check your documents</h2> <p>Is your passport still in order? What are the documents that you need in order to secure a working visa for your destination? If you are issued a tourist or a visit visa only, chances are that you might become a victim of human trafficking or an illegal recruiter. There are also some unscrupulous individuals who would give you <a href="https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1141640/public-warned-vs-fake-airline-tickets-planes-passes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fake boarding passes</a> and then disappear with your hard-earned money. Another thing to consider is your credentials. Make sure to take them with you, or better yet, <a href="https://blog.trueprofile.io/how-to-verify-your-degree-with-trueprofile-io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">make them fully portable</a> by getting a <a href="https://www.trueprofile.io/trueproof" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TrueProof</a>!</p> <h2>Check out the destination</h2> <p>Do your research on your country of destination. I remember my cousin went to Shanghai in the middle of winter with just basketball jerseys in his luggage. He had to buy winter clothes there but of course, had to go out wearing just the jerseys. Try to also find out more about the culture there and what the business protocols are. These will ensure that you set the proper expectations for yourself when you arrive.<br></p> <h4>If you are not already a TrueProfile.io member, sign up now!</h4> <div class="is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons"> <div class="wp-block-button"><a class="wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-background" href="https://sso.trueprofile.io/register" style="border-radius:50px;background-color:#00497a;color:#f5f5f5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sign up</a></div> </div> <p class="has-small-font-size">Do you want to know more about how to get a job abroad?
