Is your productivity suffering because of toxic stress? Are you suffering from burnout because of all the overtime that you put in? Or maybe you were just plain jaded coming in? If you have been struggling to find meaning in your day-to-day work, you need to find a way to start loving what you do.

Fall in love with your career

‘Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.’ We’ve all heard this, likely at times in our lives where we are about to make crucial career choices either at school, university or upon graduation. So, why’s this piece of advice so important and what should you do if you aren’t feeling overly loved-up towards your day job?

You are at your place of work for at least eight hours every weekday and so the majority of your life will be spent working. So, if you despise the work you do then you’re going to be pretty miserable, pretty quickly. We know you can’t always tell which job or industry you’re going to love, so having a ‘trial and error’ approach is completely fine, as long as you find the right role for you in the end.

Fix the pain points

What are the things that irk you and prevent you from loving your job? Do you think you have the power to change them? If there is a way that you can change that pain point, do so. Do a root cause analysis of what it is that causes your ennui. Sometimes, it can be as simple as boredom or your attitude towards your work. If it is something that is beyond your control, focus on a different aspect of your career.

Think of it as your vocation

According to the Cambridge English dictionary, a vocation is something that you should devote all your time and energy to. You have trained for this career and you have spent your whole college life gearing up towards getting this job. You chose this course in college because you felt that you were suited towards this kind of endeavour, so try to make sure from the start that it’s something you find enjoyable.

Create a supportive network around you

Ask for help, and ask if you can help.

Surrounding yourself with positive influences means that you get uplifted in your undertakings. When you ask for help from people around you or above your level, you can explore ways to develop your skills and expand your current role. You can get better synergy as well as giving you a better sense of achievement.

Of course, you have to bounce that energy back. Try to be verbally appreciative of your colleagues and don’t be afraid to ask if you can be of help. Another way to have support is to have a mentor. Having a mentor is a surefire way to be successful in your job. This is because you get to reap the benefit of your mentor’s experience without undergoing the tribulations they went through. When you’re successful, you’ll be happy. When you’re happy, you get more passionate about the work that you do.

Think that you are helping others

We put our nose to the grindstone in order to help ourselves and our family. You get to find more meaning in what you do if it’s geared towards the betterment of others. At the end of the day, our accomplishments are nothing if we have not made a difference in another person’s life.
