Even before the pandemic wreaked havoc worldwide, the need for medical workers was unabated. And so with COVID-19, the demand for healthcare professionals has hit an all-time high. Some countries have even called on retired nurses and doctors to help alleviate the burden on overstretched resources.
Exemptions On Travel Restrictions
In an effort to stem the contagion, many countries resorted to quarantines and travel restrictions, with some even ceasing the issuing of visas. However, the most notable exemptions for these were medical workers. Most countries allow free movement for healthcare professionals as they are deemed “essential workers”.
Competition To Hire Gets Fierce
The demand for nurses, doctors, and other allied healthcare workers far outstrip the supply, and employers are competing with each other by offering increased pay packages. Hospitals and government units alike are offering hazard pay for frontline healthcare workers. Medical workers at the moment can choose the best employers as the competition to hire gets fierce.
Most government regulatory bodies have not stopped issuing healthcare licenses, despite the global lockdown. Take, for example, the Department of Health (DoH) Abu Dhabi in the U.A.E. The authority has indicated that they are issuing licenses as usual. Some states in the US have even relaxed their licensure requirements. They are allowing new graduates to come into the workforce immediately by issuing temporary licenses.
5.9 Million Nurses Needed
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has, in an in-depth report on the State of the World’s Nursing 2020, reported that the world needs 5.9 million more nurses than those currently in the workforce. The WHO has therefore underscored the need to invest in nurses. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO, said, ‘This report is a stark reminder of the unique role they play, and a wakeup call to ensure they get the support they need to keep the world healthy.’
